Putting on socks is a common difficulty among the people that I work with. People often struggle with putting on socks for a number of reasons including difficulty bending, difficulty lifting legs or difficulty due to hand function. But also a persons difficulty could be due to the tightness or type of sock you are trying to put on.
Here are some helpful tips and techniques that could make putting on socks easier:
1. Use Sock Aids
Sock Aid Device: There are lots of different styles of sock aids for sale but essentially there tools help slide the sock onto your foot without bending over.
Long-handled grabber: A grabber, (like a litter picker!) can help you pull the sock up once it's on your foot.
Use a Towel: Using a rolled up towel as a sock aid can also work just as well and is a free option to try!
Try using a large bath towel and fold the towel in half, then in half again, then in half again.
Put your sock on the end of the towel, to about the heel area of the sock. Make sure the slit of the towel is facing upwards.
Then while you are holding onto the end of the towel, put your foot inside the slit area of the towel and inside the sock.
Slowly pull the towel and push your foot into the sock
Eventually your sock should be on your foot!

2. Sitting Position
Comfortable Chair: Sit in a sturdy chair with good back support.
Foot Position: Rest your leg on a footstool first before trying to put your sock on, meaning less distance to bend.
3. Choose the Right Socks
Elasticity: Choose socks with good elasticity that are easy to put on.
Size: Ensure the socks are the right size for you to avoid them being too tight.
4. Techniques for Putting on Socks
Gathering the Sock: Gather the top of the sock to create a funnel shape for easier entry.
Sliding Method: Slide your foot into the sock while holding the sock's opening.
Using Hands: Use both hands to pull the sock up over your heel and ankle.
